Structured Data and Schema Markup: The SEO Secret Weapon

Schema markup helps Google understand your business. Here's how to implement it and why it can dramatically improve your search presence.

If you're doing SEO and not using structured data, you're missing one of the most impactful — and least competitive — ranking opportunities available.

What is structured data?

Structured data (implemented via schema markup) is code that tells search engines exactly what your content is about. Instead of Google guessing that "R500" on your page is a price, schema markup explicitly says "this product costs R500."

Types of schema for businesses:

  • LocalBusiness — Your name, address, phone, hours, and service area
  • Product — Product details, pricing, availability
  • FAQ — Questions and answers that can appear directly in search results
  • Review/Rating — Star ratings shown in search snippets
  • BreadcrumbList — Navigation path shown in search results
  • Article — Blog post metadata for rich snippets
  • HowTo — Step-by-step instructions with rich display
  • Event — Event details with date, location, and tickets

What it looks like in search results:

With proper schema, your Google listing can show: - Star ratings (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - Price ranges - Business hours - FAQ accordions - Breadcrumb navigation

These enhanced listings get significantly more clicks than plain blue links.

How to implement:

Schema markup is JSON-LD code added to your page's HTML. It looks like this:

{ "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "LocalBusiness", "name": "Your Business", "address": { ... }, "telephone": "+27..." }

Our approach:

Every Pixaloom website includes relevant schema markup as standard: - Organization/LocalBusiness schema on every page - Article schema on blog posts - BreadcrumbList for navigation - FAQ schema where applicable

It's a small addition with outsized impact on your search visibility.

Test your current schema at schema.org/validator or Google's Rich Results Test.
